A hatchback is an automobile that has a car trunk or liftgate at the rear, where it normally covers the folded-down rear seats. Hatchbacks are one of the most popular body styles in the market today and there are many of them available in many different sizes and models, from several car manufacturers across the globe. Here’s our list of the top 10 best hatchback cars in the world.
Honda Fit (2010-)
It’s popular for a reason—the Honda Fit is an astonishingly practical little car. It has enough room to comfortably fit four people, as well as their luggage, yet it doesn’t weigh much more than a midsize sedan. It also gets exceptional gas mileage for its size and price: 34 mpg city/38 mpg highway with a five-speed manual transmission. The Fit comes standard with air conditioning, power windows, and locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and a CD player. You can even get heated seats! The base model starts at $14,000; you can add on leather seats or navigation if you like. All in all, it’s one of our favorite small cars around—and certainly one of our favorites when it comes to hatchbacks.
Ford Fiesta (2014-)
The Fiesta is one of Ford’s best sellers and has been awarded Car of The Year by several auto magazines. This little car is a favorite for those who love to drive but don’t have tons of space for their vehicle. Not only does it have a lot of personalities, but it’s also quite versatile! There are lots of different options you can choose from when purchasing your new Fiesta. It comes with either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission that makes driving even more fun. If you want some extra power under your hood, there’s an option for that too! With an EcoBoost engine upgrade, it will give you up to 160 horsepower. However, if you’re looking for something simple and easy on gas mileage, there are also lower-powered models available. No matter what type of driver you are, there is definitely a Fiesta that will fit all of your needs and wants.
Mini Cooper Countryman (2012-)
The best of three worlds, with seating for five, exceptional fuel economy, and a go-kart feel. Its size is also very convenient if you want to fit it into tight parking spaces. This car is what you get when you combine practicality with performance. It’s surprisingly capable off-road and provides enough space for long road trips. Furthermore, it looks great while remaining affordable ($22K). You can even choose between two different trims: Cooper or Cooper S. If your budget allows it, we recommend going for S trim as it adds extra features like heated seats and a steering wheel.
Chevrolet Sonic (2013-)
It has been around for a while, but its rivals have had trouble keeping up. With a price below $20,000, it’s not exactly cheap either. Its main flaws are that it’s quite heavy and it doesn’t perform that well when compared to its rivals. If you want one of these with room for four people then you will be looking at paying more than $25,000. However, if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty or having some extra cash then there is no reason why you shouldn’t buy one. The Sonic is a great car for those who want something small and economical without having to compromise on anything else.
VW Golf (2016-)
With a stunning design and a comfortable interior, there’s no better hatch on sale today. Yes, it lacks a bit of power but you can’t beat its driving dynamics and general appeal. Well worth a test drive if you are considering buying a new car. #4. VW Golf (2015-): The current generation is a superb little car with the great build quality and driving dynamics – although it does lack that bit of character compared to some rivals. It has one of the best interiors on sale, too. #3. Mazda 3 (2013-): A very nice small family car that’s both fun to drive and practical for everyday use – plus fuel economy is excellent for such a small engine. It looks good inside and out too! #2. Volkswagen Polo (2014-): The Polo is an ideal city car thanks to its compact dimensions and punchy engines – while it also feels pretty classy inside, especially when specced up. There’s plenty of room in the back, too. #1. Ford Fiesta (2014-): A real driver’s car that feels much more expensive than it actually is; plus build quality is superb, making it feel like a premium product despite being a cut-price purchase.
Mazda3 (2016-)
The Mazda3 has been around for several years, but it continues to dominate when it comes to best-selling and highest-rated vehicles. The 2016 model took home top honors in Kelley Blue Book’s Best Compact Car Awards and MotorWeek Drivers Choice Awards. Additionally, Consumer Reports rated it No. 1 among all small cars. It was also named a Top Safety Pick by IIHS. For a compact car, it offers plenty of room with a spacious interior that includes comfortable seats and lots of cargo space. It also gets great gas mileage (up to 35 mpg on highways) while offering responsive handling and plenty of power under the hood (184 horsepower). It’s one of our favorite compact cars out there right now—and we think you’ll love it too!
Toyota Yaris (2016-)
Toyota has long been one of our favorite automakers, and its Yaris will likely help maintain that reputation. The subcompact is a solid pick for those who are looking for an affordable, efficient, and fun-to-drive vehicle. It comes with two engine options: a 1.5L four-cylinder or a 1.8L four-cylinder. Both engines offer 106 horsepower, which means you won’t be breaking any speed records, but they also provide decent acceleration. They come paired to either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission.
Nissan Versa Note (2011-)
Not only does it make our best hatchbacks list, but also one of our picks for cheap compact cars. It comes with a lot of standard features and adds very little to your monthly payment. The Versa Note is roomy, inexpensive, and offers great fuel economy. And don’t worry about sacrificing a small car’s ease of parking; even though it’s bigger than smaller models, its turning radius remains impressively tight. If you want something sportier, consider Nissan’s Sentra SE-R Spec V or an Altima coupe. If you want something more practical (and cheaper), check out Nissan’s Leaf electric vehicle or Kia Soul EV.
Hyundai Accent(2010-)
The Hyundai Accent is a reliable, affordable, and attractive hatchback that has been a best-seller since its initial release. While it doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles of other, more expensive hatchbacks, it boasts a comfortable ride and smooth handling. Many reviewers also comment on its long list of standard features. If you want to save money without sacrificing quality or style, then you can’t go wrong with an Accent. Just make sure you test drive one before buying—you may be surprised by how much fun they are to drive!
