Top 5 expensive cars owners

The world’s richest people have lifestyles that would make the average person green with envy, and it’s no different when it comes to their cars. Here are five of the most expensive cars owned by founders of some of the most successful companies in the world.

Elon Musk, Tesla Model S

Tesla has been struggling to produce enough of its Model 3 electric car to meet demand. However, that hasn’t stopped Musk from buying one for himself. In fact, he’s gone all-in on his belief in Tesla and electric vehicles—he reportedly owns four Teslas and a Porsche 911 Turbo S. The price tag for these: is about $600,000 between them! While we can’t confirm how much Musk paid for each vehicle, we do know that Tesla models are typically more expensive than their gas-powered counterparts. For example, a base Model S costs around $68,000 (before incentives), while a base Porsche 911 starts at around $88,500. So it stands to reason that even if Musk got a deal on his rides (which is likely), they still cost him over half-a-million dollars total.

Bill Gates, Mercedes Benz S500

Of course, it would be a letdown if Microsoft founder Bill Gates was anything less than driving around in a Mercedes-Benz S500 sedan. Because let’s face it, that is what you do when you’re worth $76 billion. The car reportedly cost Gates about $200,000 back in 1998 and he still drives it today. The car has been updated over time to meet new safety standards but remains essentially unchanged from its original design. Even with all of his billions, Gates does not have a driver or security detail—he prefers to drive himself wherever he goes and doesn’t seem to mind being stopped by fans for photos on occasion.

Mark Zuckerberg, Porsche 911 Turbo

It's unclear exactly how much a certain model of Porsche 911 costs, but one thing's for sure: it doesn't come cheap. In 2012, Mark Zuckerberg became CEO of Facebook and opted to sell off 20 percent of his ownership to cover tax liabilities (The Social Network). The company was valued at $100 billion. That same year, he bought a $70,000 Porsche 911 Turbo—which is just a small drop in his massive tech fortune of nearly $19 billion.

Steve Jobs, Porsche 959

when Steve Jobs was given a Porsche 959 for his 46th birthday by German carmaker Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, he didn’t drive it more than half a mile and then decided to sell it. The reason? It wasn’t comfortable enough for everyday use. He then replaced it with a Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG. Jobs said that he had always been more of a BMW guy anyway, but I liked [the SL55] because you could get in and out of it really easily. I have bad knees and so does my wife, so we needed something easier to get into and out of.

Larry Ellison, BMW Oracle Racing Team

BMW Oracle Racing is a professional sailing team owned by Larry Ellison. The team competed in twenty-three legs of the America’s Cup and won three. In 2000, Ellison bought BMW Oracle Racing for $100 million. Today, it costs $10 million to run a campaign for one season, which means that his investment has grown tenfold over time.
